Hello John,
Time of exposure, activity level, temperature, wind chill and physical, as well as mental, conditioning are the primary considerations for the effects of environmental exposure.
Consider, for example, the boot camp training for Navy Seals. The ones who "survive" learn valuable lessons about human abilities to withstand mental, physical and environmental extremes. 55 degrees in a T-shirt would be a tropical relief for them.
On the other hand, 55 degrees in a T-shirt, with minimal activity, can become extremely uncomfortable in a very short time. How long it would take for 55 degrees to lower your core body temperature to a point where you would become hypothermic OR to a point where you would risk "some type of sickness" would depend totally upon your tolerance to lower temperatures AND upon your immune system's ability to prevent illness.
With that stated, assuming you are of average health with average physical conditioning, I would suspect you could easily tolerate 5 minutes at 50 degrees without expecting an increased risk of illness.
