My son broke out in hives yesterday afternoon--small itchy blotches all over his chest & back. His penis/testicles then swelled. We brought him to his pediatrician who said the penis swelling was related to the hives... and prescribed benadryl. Tonight the hives are back, worse than ever. Large blotches that are severely itchy all over his back & belly. His upper lip is also swollen.
I am wondering a) if there is some way to treat the symptoms (to sooth the itching so he can sleep, mostly) without using more benadryl, and b) what the underlying cause of the hives might be.
As far as I can tell he has not consumed or touched anything out of the ordinary.
Thanks for your help. I've found other threads to have excellent advice--but searched for hives and didn't find much.
