Hello Patti,
Blu-Tack adhesive may help with autophony. As you know autophony may result from the eustachian tube remaining open. It's usually closed unless you swallow or change altitude. Then it opens to equalize pressure in your ear.
When your eustachian tube remains open you may experience the sounds of your breathing, talking, swallowing and heartbeat as highly amplified due to vibrations directly on your eardrum.
This condition is also known as petulous eustachian tube. It may be caused by, among other things, weight loss, stress, pregnancy, stroke, adenoid surgery, and prescriptions like diuretics and oral contraceptives.
When Blu-Tack adhesive is used, a small amount (about pea size) is stuck to the eardrum to decrease its movement. It may stay in place about a month and is then reapplied. This procedure requires considerable skill and should not be tried at home.
Since hyperacusis is usually caused by damage to the inner ear it would not be accessible without a major surgical intervention.
Best of Health,
