Ivan "Doc" Kelley graduated from Clemson University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Science Teaching. While teaching middle school in Port Huron, Michigan, he earned his Master of Arts degree in Secondary Curriculum from Eastern Michigan University. After serving for a year as an assistant principal and another year as office manager for a private industry, he returned to school to become a chiropractic physician.

At the National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) in Lombard, Illinois, he earned a second Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology as well as his Doctor of Chiropractic degree. While attending NUHS, he was employed for three years, during evenings, as a therapist and trainer for Sports Performance and Rehabilitation Institute (SPRI).

At SPRI he was fortunate to have as his mentor Mr. Robert Gajda, the only person to win all three major body building championships within one year - 1965 Mr. USA, 1966 Mr. America and 1966 Mr. Universe. Mr. Gajda unselfishly shared his extensive knowledge of functional anatomy and exrecise physiology. This background provided Doc Kelley the opportunity to develop invaluable hands-on expertise with the rehabilitation and performance enhancement of national and international professional and top-level amateur athletes from virtually every sport.

After graduating from NUHS in 1983, he purchased an existing chiropractic practice in Newport, Oregon. One of his first projects was the creation of an illustrated manual of body-weight exercises that he still uses with patients. Outside his regular practice, he has served as a consultant, lecturer, and advisor for several nutritional companies. He has written numerous informational pieces, newsletters, and articles on chiropractic, exercise, nutrition, and other health topics for in-office use as well as for a magazine and nutritional companies. Also, he has conducted several one- to four-day seminars on natural health care for lay people as well as for professionals. In addition, he has organized and completed several nutritional product research projects.

Subsequent to completing hundreds of post-graduate hours in nutrition, he qualified as a Certified Nutritional Consultant of the American Association of Nutritional Consultants. He is also an associate of 21st Century Nutrition and an Enzyme Therapist of The International Academy of Enzyme Nutrition. In addition he has successfully attained Certified Clinical Nutritionist status with the International and American Associations of Clinical Nutritionists and Diplomate status with the American Chiropractic Association's Board of Nutrition.

In 2006 Doc successfully completed certification as an instructor for Russian Kettlebells. This was one of many programs completed with Pavel Tsatsouline, chief instructor and founder of Russian Kettlebells in the United States; Steve Maxwell, world Brazilian Jujitsu Champion and trainer of world-class athletes; and John DuCane, Qigong master and owner of DragonDoor.com, the manufacturer, distributor, and promoter of Russian Kettlebells and training. Having the extreme good fortune to study with these ultimate masters of sports medicine and physiology has given Doc the opportunity to bring his knowledge of exercise therapy to twenty-first century standards and beyond.

In early 2017 Doc set up a new company called Self Care Institute (SCI). SCI's primary goal is to help everyone take better care of themselves. In July and August of 2017 Doc presented two, two-hour seminars each month. The main topics were prevention of and recovery from the most common physical injuries. Videos of these seminars can be found on YouTube: 6/15/17, Lower Body, Part 1; 6/22/17, Lower Body, Part 2 ; 7/21/17, Upper Body, Part 1; 7/28/17, Upper Body, Part 2. In addition you can visit SCI's web site at Self Care Institute. Feel free to sign up for the newsletter and interact with the Forum and Blog.

In the fall of 2017 Doc began a Saturday morning "Coffee with Doc" program at his office. Live questions as well as questions from newsletter subscribers, on any health-related topic, are discussed. In January of 2018 this program became a LiveStream event on FaceBook on the first Saturday of each month at 9:00 am PST.

With more than thirty-four years experience with thousands of patients, Doc still enjoys nothing more than assisting people in finding ways to help themselves improve their health and quality of life.
