Nutritional balance

  1. 15 years ago

My family and I have just recently started juicing, thanks to some recommendations from friends. Our almost daily juice consists mostly of carrots and apples, with some other fruits or vegetables thrown in as they arrive in our fridge. However, I'm concerned about nutritional balance. How can I or my family know what vitamins or minerals we each specifically need? I'm concerned about loading up too much in one area and lacking in another.

I'm also wondering about multi-vitamins. We're currently taking a multi-vitamin similar to Centrum, because it seems well-rounded in what it offers. But again, I feel pretty clueless about both what I need, and what my body can digest. Any help here would be appreciated.

    Hello Dan,

Juicing is an excellent way to obtain almost all of your nutritional needs, especially if you use organically grown produce. To make sure you are getting the maximum nutritional benefit from your juicing, include one to three ounces of "green" juice in each glass. This green juice is made from your green, leafy vegetables such as chard, kale, spinach, parsley, and any other fresh greens you can find. Juice your greens first then add your other vegies such as carrots, beets, cucumbers, celery, etc. A large variety is the best way to make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need.

Whenever you juice vegetables try to use just vegetables and whenever you juice fruits try to use just fruits. Lemons, limes, and tomatoes can be used with either fruit or vegetables.

Remember that freshly made juices are best consumed fresh, so make just what you can drink shortly after it is made.

When it comes to multi-vitamins or any nutritional supplements, quality is the most essential factor. Centrum and other "generic" supplements like it are not worth their inexpensive cost. They use inferior ingredients in incorrect ratios. One of the very best multi-vitamin/mineral formulas available today is made by a company in Las Vegas called PureEssence Labs. Their multiple, called LifeEssence, can be found at most health food stores, or you could call them at 888-254-8000 to find the name and address of the store nearest you.

    Best of Health,

    Doc Kelley
