    Hello Bill,

It seems your request for information would require an entire course in nutrition to properly answer.

What nutrients are required for what?

    Doc

  3. In school, you are taught that you generally need certain things to stay healthy. I was looking for general guidelines on what is required and the sources .(i.e. the basic food groups)

    Dear Bill,

Sometimes knowing a lot about a particular subject makes it very difficult to respond to an uncomplicated question.

Let me start with a few responses and then you let me know if there is something more specific that you would like to know.

If you look on my web site under the Articles section, subcategory Food, and subsubcategory General Recommendations, you will find information on dietary things to avoid or minimize and dietary things to emphasize or maximize. These are terrific suggestions for any and everyone. If you are looking for a starting point, that is a great place to begin.

Beyond these food suggestions, we can get very specific if we know more about a particular individual such as things like genetic background, blood type, body type, etc. This information is gathered from histories, examinations, and lab work.

Without this kind of work up, nutrition is simply a guessing game. As for supplements, we know that everyone needs vitamin C complex because our bodies do not make it. How much varies from person to person. We know that as we age we tend to produce fewer digestive enzymes. We know that everyone's requirements for various nutrients depends a great deal on their physical, mental, and emotional stress levels.

The more stress in your life the more B vitamins you will need. Depending upon your exposure or not to various chemicals and pollutants, your requirements for the nutritional anti-oxidants such as Vitamins A, C, E, and the Minerals Zinc and Selenium will fluctuate. Different people can require different forms of the same supplements, especially minerals.

These are just a few examples of the multitude of possibilities. We are all unique individuals and must be treated uniquely. Even with the encyclopedic volumes of nutritional information available, you need someone who can evaluate your specific needs and requirements and make recommendations especially for you.

If you would like to let me know the city where you live and your zip code, I can try to locate a doctor close to you that has been trained to make such an evaluation.

    Hello Jamie,

    Thanks for the link.

Without going into extensive detail, some of the information posted on this web site, such as the description of the immune system, is very accurate and valuable.

    Some is not.

The immune system boosting smoothie is one example of the not so valuable information. Current research casts significant doubt about the benefits, and potential harm, of unfermented soy products such as tofu. In addition, flax oil may not be a very good health promoting oil to use internally. This particular smoothie should not be used for boosting immune function. It potentially could do more harm than good.

Also, vaccinations have a long, and easily documentable, history of pros and cons. Until those cons can be corrected and negated, vaccinations have, at best, a minimal supporting role in health care and certainly one that must be weighed and chosen with extreme caution after normal, natural, preventive health care measures have failed.
