Foods can cause pain, swelling, stiffness (Arthritic Conditions?) and numerous other problems.
A significant portion of the large list of foods that follows is from research published by the Arthritis Help Centers. Their research began in 1981 and was completed recently with a one hundred-person study. This twenty-year study of more than 1,200 foods allowed them to identify the ones that did, and did not, cause pain, swelling, and stiffness, particularly in people with some type of arthritis.
Arthritis Help Centers has a very detailed pamphlet you can purchase for ten dollars by calling 973-361-1867. You may write to them at P. O. Box 768, Wharton, NJ 07885-0768. They also offer “individualized food counseling” and can advise you on any foods, whether good or bad, for arthritic conditions, if you cannot find the food listed in their pamphlet.
Whether you have an arthritic condition or not, you should always avoid the foods listed in this article as well as food additives, especially MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) and Artificial Sweeteners (ANY and ALL kinds). Both MSG and Artificial Sweeteners have been implicated in causing or worsening these reactions and symptoms.
Foods that OFTEN contain MSG
Malt Extract and Flavoring, Barley Malt, Tamari, Natural Flavor(s) and Natural Flavoring(s) such as pork, beef, chicken, etc., Bouillon, Soy Sauce and Extract, Soy Protein Isolate and Concentrate, Seasonings (the word Seasoning), Broth and Stock, Whey Protein Isolate and Concentrate, Milk Solids in Low Fat Milk Products, Spices (sometimes), Mei-Jing and Wei-Jing, Ajinomoto, Anything Protein fortified, Ultra-Pasteurized, or Fermented, Carrageenan, Maltodextrin, Kombu Extract, Subu, Worcestershire Sauce, Pectin
In addition, two food additives that are used to enhance the effects of MSG are disodium guanylate and disodium inosinate. If these are present, so is MSG.
What To Do
Get into the habit of thoroughly reading the labels of anything and everything you intend to eat, drink, take, put on your skin, hair, nails, or otherwise use inside, or on, your body. Reactions can occur with soaps, shampoos, hair conditioners, and cosmetics. If what you are thinking of using on your skin, hair, or nails contains any ingredient(s) you would not swallow, then do not put it on the outside of your body. Whatever you put on the outside of your body is going to end up inside your body.
Check for “hydrolyzed” and “amino acid” ingredients. Some medications (including children’s medicines), drinks, candy, and chewing gum are potential sources of hidden MSG and Artificial Sweeteners. Other sources of hidden additives are the binders and fillers used in medications, nutrients, and supplements (prescription and non-prescription), enteral feeding products, and some IV (intravenous) fluids. Always ask your pharmacist what is in whatever you will be taking.
Minimize and/or avoid manufactured, processed, and fermented foods. Replace them with natural, unprocessed, unfermented foods whenever possible. Even products that say no MSG or no additives are not necessarily free of them. Most meals served in restaurants contain MSG and other additives. Delicatessen and smoked meat products as well as sausages and luncheon meats usually contain MSG and other additives. These are often found in boxed rice, pasta, powdered salad dressing mixes, and dried soups. Most commercial salad dressings, soups, meat stocks, dairy products, sauces, seasoning mixtures, frozen foods, teas, and convenience foods contain some form of MSG or other additives. “Natural Flavors” contain about 40% MSG. It is also found in mayonnaise, ketchup (catsup), mustard, and in most packaged and canned foods, including diet foods, desserts, ice cream, and cakes.
Avoid artificially sweetened foods, drinks, medications, supplements, or anything made with them. Use natural sweeteners, especially Stevia, if sweetening is necessary. If it says sugar-free, do not even consider it. It almost certainly contains artificial sweeteners.
To adequately test the effects of MSG or Artificial Sweeteners on your body, you must completely avoid anything that contains any of them for at least sixty days. If you are truly diligent, you should notice a definite decrease in your symptoms.

Summary
As you can see, most of the approximately 350 foods or food additives to-be-avoided, whether in the list of MSG foods, the Artificial Sweetener list, or the list from the Arthritis Help Centers, are restaurant entrees or pre-packaged, store-bought foods. Natural health care doctors have always cautioned that such commercial, mass-produced foods are linked to a multitude of health problems. Now, there is research to support warnings about eating such foods.
The first thing most people say after reading this is, “Well there goes almost everything I eat.” Or, “What is left for me to eat?” Or, “These are the only things my children will eat.” All are common and typical responses to this information. Most of us need to make some major changes in our food choices. It is not always comfortable or easy. It truly becomes a change of life style. However, if you suffer from pain, swelling, stiffness, or any of the other symptoms noted, or if you would just like to prevent them happening to you, or your children, you might wish to begin avoiding as many of the above foods and additives as you possibly can.
Remember, the Arthritis Help Centers studied more than 1,200 foods. That is certainly not a complete list. You still have more than 3 times as many “good” foods to select from as foods “to be avoided.” An excellent saying (Dr. Mark Stern) for you to remember whenever you shop for food, or eat somewhere other than home, is, "If it was not part of the normal diet 200 years ago, do not buy it or eat it." That eliminates all fast foods and pre-packaged foods. It is, ultimately, all about the quality of your life. And, as always, it is your choice.
