CCR is Better Than CPR: “Forget mouth-to-mouth; just keep the blood flowing”

March 11th, 2010

Cardiocerebral resuscitation (CCR) is the most important advance in the immediate care of patients in cardiac arrest since cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was first described.
Critics of traditional CPR say the emphasis on early ventilation is incorrect. Airway interventions take time from adequate chest compressions. These interventions also produce an increase in pressure in the chest. This increased pressure decreases blood return to the heart. The result is less cardiac output in those already in cardiac arrest.
CCR emphasizes continuous chest compressions with no early ventilations. A recent study comparing CCR with standard CPR demonstrated both survival, and percentage of survivors with good neurological outcome, were significantly better in those receiving CCR.

Cell Phones Updated

January 21st, 2010

The following link is to an article by Dr. Mercola. It contains two videos and a great deal of additional information on the “hazards” of cell phones. Definitely worth looking at and reading. Copy and paste to your browser:

Extreme Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (XDR-TB)

October 3rd, 2008

Extreme Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (XDR-TB) is a mutated form of tuberculosis that has already been detected in 49 countries. One person dies every 20 seconds. There is no reliable cure.

This “new” illness is becoming a major problem worldwide. The first step in preventing its spread and finding a cure is awareness. Please visit the following web site and view the video. After you do so, I think you’ll want to share this information with all your friends and family.

Save Money on Groceries and Still Eat Healthy

August 18th, 2008

The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies that protect global and individual health, produces the Shoppers’ Guide to Pesticides in Produce. It is based on the results of nearly 43,000 pesticide tests.

Organic fruits and vegetables are by definition grown without the use of pesticides. But some find the expense of organic foods prohibitive.

Of the 43 different fruit and vegetable categories in the Guide to Pesticides, the following twelve foods had the lowest pesticide load when conventionally grown. Consequently, they are the safest conventionally grown crops to consume:

  • Broccoli
  • Eggplant
  • Cabbage
  • Banana
  • Kiwi
  • Asparagus
  • Sweet peas (frozen)
  • Mango
  • Pineapple
  • Sweet corn (frozen)
  • Avocado
  • Onion

Nuts, Pregnancy and Young Children

August 9th, 2008

Recent research has found that regular consumption of nut products during pregnancy raises the odds of your child having asthma symptoms by nearly 50 percent.

About 4 percent of American children have food allergies, and roughly 3 million people in the U.S. are allergic to peanuts or tree nuts. It’s already recommended that children under 3 not be given nuts or nut products, because their immune systems are still developing and may be more susceptible to allergens.

Daily consumption of nut products increases the odds that a child will have wheezing by 42 percent, shortness of breath by 58 percent, and steroid use to ease asthma symptoms by 62 percent.

Overall, the odds of developing asthma symptoms for a child whose mother ate nuts daily are 47 percent higher.

Cell Phones

August 9th, 2008

Toronto’s department of public health has advised teenagers and young children to limit their use of cell phones, in order to avoid potential health risks. The advisory is the first of its kind in Canada.

Officials have warned that because of possible side effects from radio frequency radiation, children under eight should only use a cell phone in emergencies, and teenagers should limit calls to less than 10 minutes.

For many years, most government health agencies were dismissive of any risk. But with more studies, a pattern is emerging that suggests people who have used their cell phones for a long period of time are at greater risk of certain kinds of brain tumors.

Foot, Ankle, Knee, Hip, and Back Problems

July 26th, 2008

Do you have sore feet, ankles, or legs? Do your hips or low back hurt? Do you wear flip-flops?

If you said yes to the last question, and if you have any of the other symptoms, your flip-flops may be causing your problem(s). A study done at Auburn University shows when you walk in flip-flops, you alter your gait. This can result in foot, ankle, leg, hip, and/or lower back pain. The price of your flip-flops does not seem to matter much. The study included well-known retailers and manufacturers. Prices ranged from $5 to $50 (I’ve never seen flip-flops costing $50).

Another Reason to Play Golf

July 25th, 2008

According to the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet (www.ki.se), golf prolongs your life expectancy – provided you walk the course instead of riding in a cart (my italics). The study goes on to say the death rate for golfers is 40 percent lower than for other people of the same sex, age, and socioeconomic status. This equals a five-year increase in life expectancy. If you want to see the article for yourself, look in the “Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports.” They actually gathered data from 300,000 Swedish golfers.
